Barkan Quartet
Pianist Gilad Barkan's music draws from jazz, Brazilian and African rhythms, and sounds of his Israeli homeland. Barkan's new project is inspired by his collaboration with celebrated Israeli flutist Amir Milstein, co-leader of Bustan Abraham and Tucan Trio. Milstein's deep knowledge of Eastern and Latin American sounds and traditions together with Barkan's lyricism and innovative compositional style creates a unique and enchanting interplay. The quartet performs Barkan's compositions as well as arrangements of better known melodies from Israel and abroad, and features South African bassist John Lockwood and American drummer Eric Doob, two of Boston most sought after players on the jazz and world-music scenes.
Gilad Barkan, a native of Israel residing in Boston, recorded and performed extensively as pianist with the Issi Rozen Quartet. Barkan emerged as a composer and leader with his critically acclaimed recording debut in 2003 (Modulation, New Step Music). Barkan's group has been invited to perform nationally and internationally and has appeared at major venues such as the Berklee Performance Center, as well as on radio and network television.
