The Cape Verde Island were sighted by the Portuguese in 1456, by the end of the fifteenth century. Located 400 miles off the coast of Senegal, the Cape Verde Island became a navigational pivot. Cape Verde gained its independent from Portugal in 1975. Cape Verdeans trace their origins to the Portuguese settlers who intermingled with people brought from the West African mainland. America's more than 350.000 Cape Verdeans probably make up the largest single group of Americans who can trace their roots directly to Africa.

Maria Tavares
Veteran Afro-Cape Verdean dance instructor, Maria Tavares, has been dancing, strongly rooted in her West African/Cape Verdean heritage for her entire life.

In Cape Verde she performed with various groups, and through this contact with the music, Maria became very aware of her African-Cape Verdean origins and cultural connections. In New England she has performed with RhumbAfrica and many other African artists. Maria brings a lifetime of love and expertise to her community, which has long awaited the contributions of its African population.

Joao Cerilo
Joao Cerilo Monteiro was born in Cabo Verde Island and came to the US in 1982 bringing with him the musical traditions which he inherited from his family.An accomplished musician whose repertoire includes the traditional Cape Verde Funana, Batuku, Tabanka, Morna and Coladera. The morna, a ballad similar to the Portuguese fado, embodies Cape Verdean poetry. Mornas are slow ballads sung in Creole, a Creolized version of the Portuguese language.

Honored with the Artist Award, given by The International Gallery and Culture and winner of RISCA "Fellowship Folk Arts in Traditions" Joao Cerilo has several recordings to his name, the latest being "Kansera D'Spera" (2005) with lyrics that are filled with messages of hope.

Accompanied the rabeca (Violin), the Violao (Viola) and Cavaquinho. Funana and Batuku are traditionally from Sao Tiago Cape Verde Island. Funana is performed by a singer who accompanies himself on a Gaita, a Concertina-like accordion, other musicians usually provide a rhythm to include a ferinho or metal rasp.

Vocalist Anita Coelho returns with her ensemble backed by a dynamic group of expert musicians to perform an enticing choice of Brazilian compositions.

Together they create a truly unique musical experience, incorporating sultry vocals with the hypnotic rhythms and distinct melodies of the rich music culture of Brazil.

Rosangela Santiago
Born in Bahia, Brazil Rosangela Santiago grew up dancing traditional rhythms like samba-de-roda, candomblé, forró, lambada and various African-Brazilian dances and practiced capoeira and axé dance. For the past two she has been dancing with Marcus Santos and Batuque Axé, performing at the Beantown Jazz Festival, the Brazilian Independence Festival, and the Lowell Folk Festival. Founder of Brazil Arts World, which aims to introduce Brazilian children to Brazilian art, she brings to the stage authentic Brazilian arts and cultural events.

Samba de gafieira is danced to the music styles of samba, choros and maxixes. Characterized by tango-like choreography, where partners dance embraced together, and follow a series of typical steps. In the early 20th century, Gafieira was the term used for the dance halls where working class from suburbs of Rio gather at night to listen and dance (ballroom style) to choros, maxixes (maxixes is a mix of several influences, mainly the African lundu, the European polca) and other music styles. With the development of the samba style, that surged around 1920, the gafieira dance turned popular in the 30's and 40's. The initial instrumentation of flute, mandolin, guitars, cavaquinho and percussion, evolved in the 30's to small and big band ensembles, typical in the swing era.

Rosangela will be teaching a classic Samba de Gafieira class directly prior to the concert. Only for an additional $2.00 you too can join the 8pm class.

Melissa Aldana started her music studies and the saxophone with her father Marcos Aldana, at age 7. She developed an incredible technique that allowed her to participate in the international contest "Bravo Bravissimo", winning first place. She then secured first place in a Miami TV show contest "Quiero Ser Una Estrella". With appearances in Milan, Italy), she was able to enter the Jazz scene in Chile, gaining great respect among her jazz colleagues. In May 2006, she was invited to perform live with Randy Brecker, in Chile and then she met the great Danilo Perez, who next invited her to perform in the Panama Jazz Festival so when coming to Boston, she was granted a Berklee Presidential Scholarship, enabling her to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music since 2007. Melissa along with Michael Palma, will record their first album this year.

Melissa will be performing with her Quartet at Ryles with expert musicians, playing many of her own compositions and old standards.

Born in Santiago/Chile, Pablo started playing when he was 15 years old. After receiving a Scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music, he came Boston, where he has studied since the spring of 2007. Since coming to Boston he has been playing with great musicians from all over the world in many venues throughout New England. In the spring of 2008 he received the prestigious Zildjian Scholarship Award from the Berklee Percussion Department as one of the most outstanding drummersat the college.

He has recorded 5 CDs with different projects since his arrival to Boston.
Pablo earned 3rd place in the International Kodolányi Jazz Competition in Siofok/Hungary with the Mitsuru Hirayama Quintet in May of 2009.

2008 Pablo leads his group Chimenea with some of the best young musicians in the area, and they have been performing around different Jazz Clubs In Boston, playing original music, and famous standards.

A string player with three decades of experience in various folk, bluegrass and Western Swing groups, Paula Zeitlin has led her own jazz ensembles, like the PZQ and the Underground Jazz String Quartet, for the past ten years. She currently serves on the jazz faculty of the Rivers Music School and Wellesley College, where she teaches improvisation and coaches jazz string ensembles. Paula's debut as a leader, Walk a Little Slower (SAZL Music) was released in 2002.
