Tradição de Terra - Cape Verdean Conjunto
Traditional Music and Dance of the Cape Verde
Islands
featuring
Ederlindo & Maria Tavares
The Cape Verde Island were sighted by the Portuguese
in 1456, by the end of the fifteenth century. Located 400 miles off
the coast of Senegal, the Cape Verde Island became a navigational
pivot. Cape Verde gained its independent from Portugal in 1975. Cape
Verdeans trace their origins to the Portuguese settlers who intermingled
with people brought from the West African mainland. America's more
than 350.000 Cape Verdeans probably make up the largest single group
of Americans who can trace their roots directly to Africa.
Ederlindo Tavares
Ederlindo Tavares was born on Cabo Verde Island and came to the US
bringing with him the ferinho or metal rasp and the musical traditions
which he inherited from his family. An accomplished percussionist
whose repertoire includes the traditional Cape Verde Funana, Batuku,
Tabanka, Morna and Coladera.
Maria Tavares
Veteran Afro-Cape Verdean dance instructor, Maria Tavares, has been
dancing, strongly rooted in her West African/Cape Verdean heritage
for her entire life.
In Cape Verde she performed with various groups, and
through this contact with the music, Maria became very aware of her
African-Cape Verdean origins and cultural connections. In New England
she has performed with RhumbAfrica and many other African artists.
Maria brings a lifetime of love and expertise to her community, which
has long awaited the contributions of its African population. In
Cape Verde she performed with various groups, and through this contact

St. Patrick's Day Celebration w/ RÉAGÁNTA
Réagánta is Irish for "easy
going".

Regina Delaney
(harp, vocals, and stepdance)
Claudia Altemus
(whistle, storytelling, vocals)
Eugene Durkee
(guitar, vocals)
Blending the harp, whistle, and guitar, Réagánta plays
Traditional Irish jigs, reels, hornpipes, and slow airs with skill,
beauty and a sense of fun. Their love and respect for the Traditions
is evident as their solo and vocals harmonies infuse the ballads
they sing with intense emotion. But they are equally at home with
the humorous song, often teaching the chorus to the audience. Claudia
keeps young and old riveted to their seats with stories that are
as meaningful and fun today as they were many years ago. Regina and
Claudia often combine the stories with music, song, and dance. The
percussive sound of Step Dancing can be heard when Regina leaves
the harp and dons her Step dancing shoes. And, she happily teaches
and calls Ceili dances if the venue permits. Réagánta
is at home in sessions, in concert performances, and small intimate
venues.
Réagánta has two CDs, "Nollaig" and
"Cup O Tea" Members of Réagánta appear
on Regina Delaneys solo CD "From These Hands" and
on The New England Irish Harp Orchestras CD, "Live from
the Portsmouth Athaeneum"

Esthema's music is a fusion of sounds from different
cultures and genres. Elements taken from the musical traditions of
the Eastern European/Balkan and Near/Middle Eastern regions are intertwined
with Progressive Rock and Jazz to create the sounds of a World Fusion
Ensemble. The five musicians that shape the sound of Esthema bring
together both Western and Eastern instruments to form a unique blend.
Bouzouki, Oud, Doumbek, and Violin color the compositions with their
beautifully Eastern tone while Guitar, Bass, and Drums elicit the
many Western influences that shape the sound of Esthema.
The members of Esthema as people, come from very different
places with very different experiences. As musicians, they bring
those places and experiences together into one musical setting.

Double- CD Release Party: Jim Repa & Steve Langone
Steve Langone Group and Jim Repa's
"Destinations" Ensemble
Steve Langone Group

Out of that seemingly unlikely hotbed of jazz, New Bedford, Mass.,
from Whaling City Sounds, comes another sharp-edged, straight ahead
outing: Finders Keepers from The Steve Langone Group. ~Dan
McClenaghan - All About Jazz
To the great wide jazz world, the name of drummer
Steve Langone may be a new one, in which case the combustible, clearly
conceived music on this disc will be a revelation. For those who
have been listening in the Boston area for the past decade, the results
will not be so surprising. Langone is the kind of musician whose
talent is noticed when heard in any of the numerous ensembles with
which he has performed, and whose range is just as obvious once you
notice that he is one of the most active drummers in a variety of
contexts. This is his debut as a leader, and it both summarizes the
skills that have made him so successful and prophesizes an even brighter
future& ~(Bob Blumenthal,
liner notes for Finders Keepers)
Steve Langone Group features Steve's original compositions
...
Jim Repa - alto
Rick DiMuzio - tenor
Bruce Bartlett - guitar
Kevin Harris - piano
Jef Charland - bass
Steve Langone - drums
Jim Repa and the Destinations
Ensemble

Saxophonist and flutist Jim Repa leads a 7-piece ensemble playing
music from their recent CD Destinations. The group
performs engaging jazz and world music drawn from influences around
the globe. Jims original compositions are inspired by the
sounds and sights of South Africa, the Caribbean, Brazil, France,
Spain, the Middle East and the trails of New Hampshire. The fine
ensemble is adept at navigating a variety of moods and rhythmic styles,
and will take you on a memorable musical tour.
The ensemble features:
Jim Repa - alto
sax, soprano sax, flute and alto flute
Ken Cervenka - trumpet
and flugelhorn
Rick DiMuzio - tenor

Bruce Bartlett Trio
The streets are paved with guitar players in this age-old town. You can see them as you walk around -- their tuning pegs and whammy bars sticking up through the pavement, their hands frozen in the shape of a Jimmy Page lick. The ones left standing tend to be pretty good. And then there's Bruce Bartlett. It's no exaggeration to say that Bruce is a pillar of jazz-funk-blues guitar culture in this intensely jazzy, funky, bluesy place.
