The Fa Diyez Ensemble
First band:8:00 pm
The Fa Diyez Ensemble
Tev Stevig - oud
Brian Oneill - percussion
Chris Veilleux - ney
Paddy League - kemenche
Bio:
The Fa Diyez Ensemble is comprised of three accomplished multi-instrumentalists
from the Boston area with backgrounds in jazz, classical, and various
folk music genres from around the world. However, in this case, the
ensemble leaves all that behind to focus on performing the classical
music of the Ottoman Empire in the traditional way. Through intense
study of makam here in the US and abroad, and use of traditional
instruments such as ney (reed flute), oud (plucked lute) and bendir
(frame drum) , the group performs the pes¸rev and saz semai
forms, while also applying the rules of makam to the art of taxim
(instrumental improvisation). While the core of the group consists
of Chris Veilleux (ney), Tev Stevig (oud), and Brian O'Neill (bendir),
The Fa Diyez Ensemble occasionally expands beyond its typical trio
formation to include other musicians from the Ottoman Classical community.
fadiyezmusic.com

Second band:
Kafana
Tev Stevig - plucked strings
Brian Oneill - percussion
Chris Veilleux - clarinet
Greg Loughman - bass
Michael McLaughlin - accordion
Joe Kessler - violin
Bio:
The all-acoustic ensemble Kafana derives its name from a common term
in the Balkans, meaning a place to happily gather to eat, drink,
and listen to music. The group developed its repertoire over 3 years
of weekly performances at a restaurant in Somerville, MA and play
music from the Balkans, Greece, and Turkey in their own unique way.
Kafana seek to combine elements from these musical cultures with
their own varied backgrounds to create modern American folk music:
a cultural mash-up of styles that is respectful of the traditions
they draw from without being musically shackled by them. Their new
repertoire of Balkan and Turkish influenced original compositions
(written by multi-instrumentalist Tev Stevig) is a further development
of this idea that continues to explore the boundaries of both American
and world music. http://kafanamusic.com

Evan Marien & Randy Runyon Duo
For one night only Evan
Marien and Randy
Runyon bring a special duo performance
to Ryles World Wednesdays at ryles concert series.
Guitarist Randy Runyon, will accompany bassist
Evan Marien on his original music, which is influenced by 20th century
French and Russian music.
Evan was recently voted one of 2009's Most Exciting
New Players by the readers of Bass Player Magazine, and was recently
profiled in the January 2010 issue of Bass Guitar Magazine.
Randy Runyon has performed with drummer Terri
Lyne Carrington at the Blue Note and the Iridium Jazz Club in New
York City, given clinics with trumpeter Tiger Okoshi, performed with
saxophonist Bob Mintzer and trumpeter Randy Brecker.
Randy recently released his first CD "Arrival"
to widespread acclaim. Both Evan and Randy have a unique musical
chemistry together and are pleased to share this rare moment at Ryles.
Evan
Marien
"...highly original harmonic approach to
soloing....an emerging bass talent...one who backs up his stunning
bass work with music of depth and subtlety" - Mike
Flynn, Bass Guitar Magazine
"One of my current favorite bass players
to hit the scene... On Evan's new CD, he displays very mature compositions
and playing. His tone(s) is amazing and Evan has a great sense of
phrasing and time" - Ray
Riendeau, Notreble.com
"I truly think that every electric bassist
(at the very least) should check this out. The playing is straight
killing, Evans tone is wonderful, the band is smoking but, most importantly,
it's interesting to listen to and very musical" - Damien
Erskine, Bass Musician Magazine
Randy
Runyon
"...Runyon approaches the songs like Kenny Burrell
with a Pat Metheny fixation, his dark and stinging notes dancing
over the bar lines with a studied logic. Runyon's playing is calm
and assured, as if he has nothing to prove. And he focuses on the
essence of each melody rather than how fast he can play or the usual
guitar pyrotechnics."
"...Runyon plays like an old soul on his self-titled
debut as a leader. His song selections are far beyond the usual standards
fare including classic and challenging material..."
"A teacher has not done his job well if
the student does not surpass him... "This CD is Randy's compliment
to me and I thank him very much! - Carl
Filipiak - March 2007
This CD should serve as an excellent introduction
to Randy Runyon. - Ken Dryden

Scott Alan / The Sunday Saints
** Double-Bill **
Scott Alan -
Showtime 7 pm, $35.00
The Sunday Saints -
Showtime 9:30 pm, $10.00
Scott Alan

Cutting
edge NYC composer/lyricist Scott Alan in concert with several of
the Greater Boston area's finest young singers in an evening of cabaret/pop/jazz
at it's finest. His music crosses over
from musical theater, pop, jazz to gospel with tasty licks of R&B.
Mr. Alan has been hailed as
"...the cutting edge of musical theater and pop..."
and "...one of the brightest lights
of up and coming theater/pop composers..." and has become
a favorite of the new generation of Broadway and NYC pop/jazz performers
with his music being recorded by Shoshana Bean, Stephanie Block,
Eden Espinosa, Liz Callaway, Sutton Foster, Randy Graff, Lisa Brescia,
Marcus Paul James and more.
This is a rare opportunity to see and hear one of
the finest new composers and some amazing new voices in an evening
of highly charged, soaring music in the intimate, world class Ryles
Jazz Club.
The Sunday Saints

Sopped in the backbeats of New Orleans R&B and
southern funky soul, award-winning vocalist Jordan Valentine and
her band The Sunday Saints burn up the stage with a horn-stoked 60s
soul barnburner. Evoking the likes of Ike & Tina, The Meters, Lyn
Collins, and Booker T, they bring a drum-tight, sharp-dressed soul
review to the stage, fueled by future-classic originals and rare
gems. As The Boston
Phoenix wrote, "Valentine
& is a veteran of the Bucket of Blood circuit, where five or six
sets of hard entertainment is what keeps bikers and other bar beasts
from peeling each others' skins off, and a good singer needs to be
able to hold and bend a note in a firestorm of sound - just like
she does."
The Saints' show is part revivalist meeting, part
Saturday night sin, and all soul satisfaction.
