Direct from Brazil: Pandiero Jazz w/ Scott Feiner

Direct from Brazil: Pandiero Jazz w/ Scott Feiner
What happens when you mix the rich rhythmic texture of the Brazilian pandeiro with the intensity of New York City jazz?

Scott Feiner, an ex-jazz guitarist from New York found the answer. Driven by his passion for the pandeiro, he moved to Brasil in 2001 where he submerged himself in Rio de Janeiros music scene, gaining playing experience in the traditional samba and choro settings typically found in Rio.

But Feiner wanted more. He wanted to create something different by mixing the unique timbre of the pandeiro with the music he'd played for years as a guitarist on the New York jazz scene. He wanted to play with great improvisers, on a variety of themes, in ways you wouldnt normally expect to hear a pandeiro.

The idea for Pandeiro Jazz was born in June 2004 during a gig in New York City. Alongside Feiner were two old friends, guitarist Freddie Bryant (Ben Riley, Tom Harrell) and saxophonist Joel Frahm (Brad Mehldau, Brian Blade). Bryant was the perfect choice for this blending of styles: a rare breed of guitarist and composer with deep roots in jazz, Brazilian, and classical music, who has mixed them into a highly personal style. Frahm is one of New York's most sought after saxophonists, known for his deep mix of "head and heart". A year after that gig, in May of 2005, Feiner returned to New York and in two days the CD Pandeiro Jazz was recorded. Along with Feiner, Bryant and Frahm, the exceptional bassist Joe Martin (Kurt Rosenwinkel, Chris Potter) joined them on three tracks. Aside from a few original compositions the group put their own stamp on classics by John Coltrane, Horace Silver, Wayne Shorter, and Stevie Wonder.

Upon the highly acclaimed release of Pandeiro Jazz by the Brazilian label Delira Música in April 2006, Feiner returned to New York City to celebrate with a performance at the club Smoke. This was probably the first jazz gig in New York City ever led by a pandeiro player. A critic for All About Jazz-New York had this to say about the performance and CD:

Just when you thought that there was very little someone could introduce to the world of jazz, here comes this New York-born musician with a pandeiro in his hand to prove otherwise ... Pandeiro Jazz is an innovation which deserves a wider audience.

Back in Brazil, where the CD was given a four-star review by the newspaper O Globo, Feiner assembled a group of some of Rio de Janeiros top musicians to perform with him locally. On saxophones, Marcelo Martins (Djavan, João Bosco), guitarist João Castilho (Maria Bethânia, Djavan) and bassist Alberto Continentino (Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento). The group immediately developed its own sound and has impressed Brazilian audiences with its high energy, musical interaction and intense groove. They have performed extensively in Rio de Janeiro, at venues such as Mistura Fina and Sala Baden Powell as well as the 2006 edition of the Festival In Jazz.

Feiner returned to New York again in April 2007 this time to perform at the club Jazz Standard as part of their New Directions in Latin Jazz series. In July 2007 Scott Feiner & Pandeiro Jazz performed at the Pori Jazz Festival in Finland, with Mark Turner featured on saxophone.

Bruce Bartlett Trio
The streets are paved with guitar players in this age-old town. You can see them as you walk around -- their tuning pegs and whammy bars sticking up through the pavement, their hands frozen in the shape of a Jimmy Page lick. The ones left standing tend to be pretty good. And then there's Bruce Bartlett. It's no exaggeration to say that Bruce is a pillar of jazz-funk-blues guitar culture in this intensely jazzy, funky, bluesy place.

Burton Green

Burton Green
The era that ushered in free jazz was perhaps marked more greatly by hornmen than by the pianists. Chicago-born pianist Burton Greene, who came to prominence on three 1966 ESP recordings, seems to have been given a bit of short shrift in the history books, mostly because until the last decade or so a significant amount of his sizeable discography was either out of print or on woefully obscure European labels unavailable in the States. With this latest trio of releases, however, Greene’s status is cemented as a continually-evolving composer and improviser, who has embraced freedom as a tool rather than an end. -Clifford Allen, All About Jazz, Photo by Peter Gannushkin

Francisco Pais Quintet

Francisco Pais Quintet
Francisco just got signed with Fresh Sound New Talent a label based of Barcelona in Spain. His debut CD Not Afraid of Color was released in March 2006. Franciscos own band, the Francisco Pais Quintet, features some of NYC's best players and plays primarily original music that blends elements of American jazz with European classical music and Pop. The quintet has been touring in Europe for five years, playing at a number of famous venues and jazz festivals including the Hot Club of Lisbon, the Cultural Center of Belem, the Almodovar Jazz festival, and Tomar Jazz Festival. As the leader of the quintet, Francisco has been fortunate to collaborate with musicians such as Chris Cheek, Massimo Biolcati, Dayna Stephens, Peter Slavov, Albert Sanz, Ferenc Nemeth, Nathan Blehar, Leo Genovese and Demien Cabaud. They have helped to shape the sound of his band and to inspire his compositions.

Born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1976, Francisco started playing music when his father taught him his first chords on the guitar at age 5. During Franciscos youth, his father introduced him to a range of music, including fado, sixties rock, and traditional Brazilian music. Very early on, he knew that he wanted to be a professional musician.

After an audition in Paris in 1998, Francisco was awarded a scholarship to come to the United States to study jazz performance at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. While at Berklee, he had the opportunity to take lessons and attend master classes by Pat Metheny, Peter Bernstein, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Turner, Mulgrew Miller, Ralph Peterson, Jeff Tain Watts, Hal Crook, Branford Marsalis and Mick Goodrick. In 2002, Francisco graduated cum laude with a B.A. in music performance.

When he first arrived in Boston, Francisco gained extensive experience in big band music, playing and touring with an orchestra in such venues as Central Park, the Today Show (at NBC Studios), the Boston Sports Awards, the Emerson Majestic Theater and the Wang Center. He later performed with a number of prominent musicians, including Joe Lovano, Dave Santoro, John Benitez, George Garzonne, and Mick Goodrich. Recently he played in Prague and Amsterdam at the Summer Jazz Workshop along side David Doruzka, Petar Dvorski, Josephine Lindstrand, Marteen Van Der Griten and others. In 2002 he was invited to teach and perform at the Litchfield Jazz Festival and its summer program. Then, in 2003, Francisco became head of the jazz department at the Wheeler School in Providence, Rhode Island. Francisco is also the director of the Wheeler jazz camp where during a week in June he hires the best jazz players in the New York scene for a week of workshops, master classes and concerts.

This gig allowed Billy to establish himself as a reputable drummer, and he hasn't looked back since. Billy has worked with a countless number of jazz greats including McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Smith, Stan Getz, Charlie Rouse, Cecil Taylor, Pharoah Sanders, Wes Montgomery, and Miles Davis.

Billy strives to be a complete musician.  Rather than always trying to advance his own career, he has been involved in group projects and has worked as a sideman with great success.  As examples, he was a member of the Mingus Dynasty, he co-founded percussion ensemble Coloquim III, and he played with The Great Friends and Quest.

Hart has recorded 8 successful albums and appears on literally hundreds of recordings as a sideman.  The fact that so many great musicians want Hart as their drummer is testament to his great playing.  Hart is still highly energetic and in demand as a musician and teacher to this day.
